Bu çalışma II. Mahmud döneminde yapılan kıyafet değişikliğini kapsamaktadır. Konunun başlangıcında giyim kuşamı belirleyen nedenler ele alınarak, İslamiyet öncesi ve sonrası Türklerin giyim kuşam değişimi üzerinde durulmuştur. İslamiyetle beraber Türk kültüründeki kıyafet geleneğinin değişimi vurgulanmıştır. Batılılaşma hareketleriyle beraber II. Mahmud’a kadar geçen süreçteki değişim açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır. Sultan II. Mahmut, devletin içte ve dışta karşılaştığı ciddi ve hayati tehlikelerle hiç yılmadan üzerlerine gitmiş, Islahat etkinliklerinde yapılması gerekenler ne ise titizlikle yerine getirmeye çalışmıştır. Uygulamalarında devlet-toplum ilişkilerini düzenleyici yeni ve köklü bir değişim modeli yürütmüş, eğitim, sağlık, sosyal ve ekonomik alanlar ile devlet kurumlarında yeniliklere karşı toplumun çeşitli katmanlarından tepkiler gelse de bunları sistemli bir şekilde bertaraf etmesini bilmiştir. Yenileşmeler zaman zaman yüzeysel boyutlarda kalsa da, II. Mahmut zamanı garplılaşma modelinde dikkatle incelenmesi ve araştırılması gereken bir dönemdir. Anahtar Kelimeler: II. This study deals with the revolution of the clothes in the period of Mahmud II. Firstly, it is dwelled on the changing of Turkish clothes in the period of pre-Islamic and Islamic period after evaluating the reason that determined of the clothes. Secondly, it is stressed on changing in the clothe customs of Turks with the Islam. Then it is examined the changes until Mahmud II with the westernization movements. Sultan Mahmud had bravely struggled with the serious and vital internal and external threats without fear. He had fastidiously determined to carry out the reformations that had needed to be done. He carried out new and fundamental changing models in state – society relations, even though some serious opposition come from different level of society and public foundations against the reform movements in the fields of education, health, social and economic, he had succeeded to overcome with these difficulties. Although modernization movements sometimes remained superficial, the period of Mahmud II is a crucial subject to be dwell on as one of the best models of westernization movements.
