The Thesis titled as “ Women in Ottoman Miniature Painting (A Essay on before The Times of Levnî) tries to explain in which contexes and how the images of women are depicted between XV th and XVIII th centuries. The images of women are evaluated in three main categories which are based on the themes of miniatures and identities of the women. It was thought that the images of women in illustarated historical, literary and scientific texts and albums can be classifed as a religious, social end literary types. Every type includes other subcategories. In the literature derived from various fields,the women figures who are somehow related to a religious event or involved in the stories of different prophets are investigated in terms of their identity and the way they are depicted in the miniatures. The difference between the depiction of Ottoman women and the depiction of non-Ottoman women is also explored in the thesis. For the figures from the Ottoman society, how the concept of indoor and outdoor places make a difference in the depiction of women is studied. Literary figures are also invesigated. When the subjects such as the effects of Middle Asia and Seljukid arts, other schools of Islamic miniature painting on Ottoman miniature painting, the interaction between the Ottoman art and the arts of the countries which the Emprie had relations with and the creativity of Ottoman miniature painter are studied in more details, it is thought that the women figures can be evaluated differently with respect to era and the taste of sovereign.
